First firing  June
18-19
Here it is, almost ready. The wood pile stands ready, and the door will
soon be bricked in.
Let the stoking begin!!  The first step is to begin a bed of coals in the
bourrie box. This chamber is connected to the inside of the kiln by
several small vents at the bottom that connect to another fire box in the
chamber.  The small pieces of scrap wood are inserted into holes on the
side.  This will go on for several hours until there is a large bed of coals
built up.
The carbon on the bricks will start to burn off as the kiln gets hotter. We
can see that it is drafting the way Paul expected! YAY
.
Paul's brother Rob was here for his annual visit, so we put him to work!
Our wood comes from a nearby cabinet shop that offers it's cast offs to
the public for free.  A few old pallets were sawed up, and also some dead
Nothing to do now but
stoke for the next 36
hours!  Behind Rob you
can see the awaiting
wood pile. All of the
wood was eventually
used up. The kiln
reached Cone 10, with
11 just beginning to tip,
meaning that the goal
was reached of over
2300 degrees f.  There
will be NO salt added to
this firing, although we
believe there will be
residual salt burning
out of the shelves for
the first few firings.
Started at 11am Sat,
they were finished by
11pm Sunday night.
Paul peeked in the
cooling kiln today the
20th, and by the time I
get home from work at
noon today, there
should be some pottery
to Photograph!
Coming next the Kiln
