Well, I see some people are looking! This is my last day off this week, I'll be subbingtill friday. It's just going to get busier as we head toward spring. By then I'll be ready to get into the studio and start with the clay again.
I'm not sure how this blog thing works, but I hpoe I haven't solicited you into joining something you don't want. If I get more courage up I just might go public. I don't have much time for chats these days, and I am not a good letter writer, so I thought this would be a good place to keep everybody upto date.
Thoughts on retirement
When we moved up here 23 years ago, my dad said we were fools, we were retiring at age 27!!! Well I laughed that eliminates having to save for retirement. My dream back then was just to make stuff forever.
Well we have retired from the art fair circuit. As the spring approaches we would normally be filling out applictions getting slides made sending booth fees jury fees etc all over the country. Speaking for myself I just couldn't get into it this year. The local shows we tried were terrible. Some of our old favorites, like the uptown which we did for over 11 years, rejected us. The cost was just too prohibitive, and the shows we did do really sucked. Most of them did, anyway. There are a couple that I have applied for, that generally are worth doing, but that's a far cry from the rockhard days of 30 shows a year.
Being an artist has always been an advantage for me because no matter what the situation financially, I have always been able to think up something to make things better. I am working my creative instincts here on the internet, in hopes of eliminating having to travel at all to sell our work. My dream for Morris Pottery is to create an oasis for creativity. Paul has already started classes, but my vision is of a residency or retreat, where an individual can come and stay in the apprentice cabin, and be free to create whatever they want to.I'm thinking about trying for the McKnight grant this year, for a studio of my own, crossing fingers, but most people that win those have more degrees than I do. This is no time to think negatively however, I'll wait to rant in case I get rejected this year. that deadline is approaching fast, and here I sit blabbing.........well later, then....
