Frequently Asked Questions

Is your work investment quality?
I would say that any high quality handmade work purchased these days has
investment quality. The craftspeople that have been working in the last forty or
fifty years or so have been part of a new craftsman movement that I'm positive
will be looked back on as a renaissance of the hand made.
When I buy work of other people the "investment" involves how much I will enjoy
the piece in my lifetime. I also invested in a working artist and helped them, in a
small way to continue their work. The secondary market means little to me as a
producer of any work, because, of course, we have already been compensated.
That said, Morris Pottery is the best quality work that our combined years of
experience can produce. I prefer the term "gallery quality" because we look each
piece over as if we were a gallery owner choosing for their store.
It doesn't take an expert to figure out that quality work made by hand in The USA
will hold or exceed it's value in the years to come. In a market filled with cheap
imported, disposable merchandise the quality of handmade objects will distinguish
them over time.
I have assembled a few answers here that I have been asked over the years at
Art shows and now online. These answers represent my personal policy or opinion.
I broke my Rock Hard Stoneware mug, can you replace it?
Rock hard Stoneware was a partnership we formed in 1991 with another potter. We
produced salt glazed stoneware until 2003 when the company dissolved. Paul and I
were the creative directors of the operation, so the work you see today has evolved
from those years in the company. Over the years we made thousands of pieces, and
when the company ended, we were glad to be free to create again and experience
new artistic growth. Since then, we have rebuilt the kiln, and converted it to wood
firing. This has changed the look and feel of the pottery and for the better , in my
opinion, because we are now creating our own work. The basic techniques used to
apply the slips and glazes, and the designs themselves still come from me and Paul.
The one of a kind nature of our work, and the changes we have made in our
processes will prevent us from duplicating exactly the work you need replaced.
That said, we will make every effort to find or make for you a similar piece, but it
would be impossible for us to duplicate the one you lost.
Do you make special orders/comissions?
Yes and no, we do not make items that are not in our regular production cycle.
Anything you see on the web site can be ordered, for example horse plates,
dragonfly pilsner, however, we won't copy the work of another artist, or as stated
above, try to replicate work of the past. If there is a certain animal you would like
I can usually accommodate most requests.
